6-1Writing a diary entry
You write one diary page per date. If you write again on the same date, you continue editing that day's page. A written diary is free.
On the calendar, tap or click the date cell you want to write about. The sheet for that date opens.
Tap or click + at the top right of the sheet.
Tap or click “Write a diary entry” (“Keep a record of your day”). The diary editor opens.
Type a title in the “Title (optional)” field. You can leave the title empty.
Type the text in the “Write about your day.” field.
Tap or click “Done”. The entry is saved and the same window changes to the reading view.
In the bar at the bottom of the editor, you set the following.
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| Item in the bar | What it does |
|---|---|
| “Font” | Chooses the font for the diary. For which fonts are free and which are Pro, see “17-1 What is free and what Pro unlocks” in “Chapter 17 Free and Pro”. |
| Text size bar | Slide the bar between the small “A” and the large “A” to change the text size. |
| “Decorate with stickers” | Places stickers, notes, and photos on the diary paper (Pro, 6-5 Sticker decorating and Pencil drawing (Pro)). |
| “Draw” | Draws on the paper with Apple Pencil on iPad (Pro, 6-5 Sticker decorating and Pencil drawing (Pro)). |
| “Delete diary entry” | Deletes an entry you already saved. It does not appear on an entry you are writing for the first time. |
Opening an entry you wrote
The sheet of a date with a diary entry shows a diary card. Tap the card to open the entry in the reading view. To edit it, tap “Edit” in the reading view. Tap “Close” to close the reading view.
On a date with no diary entry yet, tapping “Write a diary entry” opens the editor directly, without the reading view.
Stopping while writing
In the editor, tap “Cancel” to leave without saving what you wrote. If it was a new entry, the window closes. If you were editing an entry you already wrote, you return to the reading view. If you changed the text, the app first asks “Discard your changes?”. Tap “Discard” to leave the changes unsaved, or tap “Keep Writing” to return to the editor. If you changed nothing, the app does not ask.
Deleting a diary entry
Open the entry you want to delete and tap or click “Edit”.
Tap or click “Delete diary entry” in the bottom bar.
In the “Delete this day's diary entry?” window, tap or click “Delete diary entry”.
6-2Viewing “My diary”
The entries you have written so far are collected in “My diary” (“Everything you've written, newest first”) in the “My records” group of Settings. Entries written in your own calendar and entries written in shared calendars all go into this list.
- Entries are grouped by month, with the newest at the top.
- Each row shows the date and day of the week, and the title or the start of the text. An entry with stickers also shows the number of stickers, as in “3 stickers”.
- Tap a row to open that entry in the reading view. To edit it, tap “Edit”.
- When you open an entry that is shown in a shared calendar, its header names that calendar, as in “Shared in “Our Summer”” (6-3 Who can see your diary).
How you delete an entry from the list depends on the device.
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| Device | How to delete |
|---|---|
| iPhone, iPad | Swipe the row left and tap “Delete”, or touch and hold the row and tap “Delete”. |
| Mac | Right-click the row and click “Delete”. |
In the “Delete this diary entry?” window, tap “Delete diary entry” to delete it.
“Save as PDF” at the top of the list turns your diary into a PDF file. For how to make it, see “10-2 Saving as a PDF (Pro)” in “Chapter 10 Exporting and printing”.
If you have not written any entries yet, “No diary entries yet” and “Open a date on the calendar and tap ‘Write a diary entry’ to write your first one.” appear.
6-3Who can see your diary
Your diary is only for you. When you turn on “Show my diary” in a shared calendar, only the entries written in that calendar are read by the people who decorate that calendar with you. The app's “How sharing works” also says “Your diary is only for you. Turn on Show my diary in a shared calendar and the entries you write in that calendar are shared. To share an entry you wrote somewhere else, open it in that calendar and tap Show in this calendar too.”
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| Where the entry was written | “Show my diary” in that calendar | Who sees it |
|---|---|---|
| Your own calendar | (no switch) | Only you. To show it in a shared calendar, follow 6-4 Showing entries in a shared calendar. |
| Shared calendar “Our Summer” | Off (the starting state) | Only you. |
| Shared calendar “Our Summer” | On | You and the people who decorate “Our Summer” with you. It does not appear in other shared calendars. |
- “the entries you write in that calendar” are entries first written while you were viewing that shared calendar. To show the same entry in another calendar too, tap “Show in this calendar too” in that calendar (6-4).
- A shown entry is shared as the whole page, not only the words. While the switch is on, “The people you decorate with read the diary entries you write in this calendar. The whole page goes — words, stickers, photos, and drawings.” appears.
- “Show my diary” is the switch that shows your diary. You see the other person's diary only when they turn on their own switch.
- People you share a category with do not see your diary.
Turning “Show my diary” on and off
In Settings ▸ Manage sharing, tap or click the shared calendar “Our Summer” to open “Manage this calendar”.
Turn on the “Show my diary” switch.
In the “Show your diary in this calendar?” window, tap or click “Show my diary”. The window's explanation is “The people you decorate with will read the diary entries you write in this calendar — the whole page, including stickers, photos, and drawings. Turn it off and they stop right away; the entries disappear from their screens too.”
When you turn the switch off, it turns off right away with no confirmation window, and the entries you showed disappear from the other people's screens. While it is off, the card shows “Even your diary entries in this calendar stay yours alone.”
In a calendar you joined with “Can view”, you cannot turn on the switch, and “You were invited to view only, so your diary can't be shown here.” appears. If your permission changed to “Can view” while the switch was on, you can still turn it off.
The other items in “Manage this calendar” are explained in “7-5 Who can do what” in “Chapter 7 Sharing”.
Sharing status in the entry header
When you open your entry, its header shows where the entry is shown now.
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| “Shared in this calendar” | The people of the shared calendar you are viewing now read this entry. |
| “Only you can see this” | This entry is not shown in any calendar. This status appears when you open the entry in a shared calendar. |
| “Shared only in “Book Club”” | The entry is not shown in the calendar you are viewing, only in the one calendar named. |
| “Shared only in 2 other calendars” | The entry is not shown in the calendar you are viewing, and is shown in several other calendars. |
| “Shared in “Our Summer”” · “Shared in 2 calendars” | When you open the entry in your own calendar or in “My diary”, these show the shared calendars where the entry is shown. |
If an entry opened in your own calendar is not shown in any calendar, the header has no sharing status.
Diary entries shown on the web are explained in “Chapter 11 Using Calliary on the web”.
6-4Showing entries in a shared calendar
You can show an entry written in your own calendar, or in another shared calendar, in the shared calendar “Our Summer” as well. You do this once for each entry.
Open “Our Summer” with the calendar button at the top of the screen.
Tap or click the date cell the entry was written on, then tap or click the diary card in the sheet.
The entry header shows “Only you can see this” (or “Shared only in “Book Club””) and the “Show in this calendar too” button. Tap “Show in this calendar too”.
If “Show my diary” is off in “Our Summer”, the “Show your diary in this calendar?” window appears. Tap or click “Show my diary”.
When the header status changes to “Shared in this calendar”, the people of “Our Summer” read that entry.
6-5Sticker decorating and Pencil drawing (Pro)
On the diary paper, you place stickers, notes, and photos as on the calendar, and on iPad you draw with Apple Pencil. Diary decorating is a Pro feature.
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| Device | “Decorate with stickers” | “Draw” |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Yes | No (drawings made on iPad are shown) |
| iPad | Yes | Yes (Apple Pencil) |
| Mac | Yes | No (drawings made on iPad are shown) |
Without Pro, the two chips have a lock and a “Pro” mark. Tap or click a locked chip to open the purchase screen. The entry you were writing stays as it is. After Pro ends, stickers and drawings you already placed stay visible in your diary.
When you write an entry in a shared calendar where you cannot decorate (for example, as a participant in a calendar with “Only the owner decorates” on), the two chips do not appear. You can still write text.
Placing stickers
In the diary editor, tap or click “Decorate with stickers”. The bottom bar changes to the decorating bar (“Decorating with stickers”) and “Pick a sticker to place” appears.
Tap or click one of the note, sticker, or photo buttons in the bar, or tap or click a favorite or recent sticker in the row below.
When “Tap where you want it” and “Tap the paper where you want it” appear, tap or click the spot on the paper.
Tap or click “Write” to return to the writing bar.
Tap or click “Done” to save.
How to find stickers, use your photo stickers and notes, and move, resize, or delete what you placed is the same as for decorating a calendar. See “8-2 Placing and finding stickers” through “8-6 Selecting, moving, resizing, deleting, and undoing” in “Chapter 8 Decorating (Pro)”.
Drawing with Apple Pencil (iPad)
In the diary editor, tap “Draw”. In the decorating bar, tap “Draw”.
“Drawing mode” and “Pick a pen and draw on the paper” appear, and the pen tool palette appears.
Choose a pen and draw on the paper with Apple Pencil.
Tap “Done drawing” to return to writing. In the drawing bar, tap “Decorate” to switch to placing stickers, or “Write” to switch to writing.
While you place stickers on an existing entry, touching the paper with the tip of Apple Pencil switches to drawing right away. If you start drawing on a date with no text yet, that day's diary page is created.
