8-1Entering and leaving decorating mode
To decorate the calendar, tap the brush button to enter decorating mode. The usual calendar screen is view mode. In view mode, you tap dates to see events. In decorating mode, you place and move stickers. Decorating is a Pro feature.
Open the calendar in the month view. You can enter decorating mode only from the month view.
Tap the brush button on the screen.
“Decorating mode” and “Pick a sticker, then tap where it goes” appear near the top of the screen, and the decorating toolbar appears.
When you finish decorating, tap “Done” or tap the brush button again. You return to view mode.
How decorations carry over to your other devices is explained in “Chapter 12 Sync and notifications”.
The decorating toolbar has the following. On an iPad in landscape and on Mac, the right-hand column turns into the decorating tools while you decorate.
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| Tool | What it does | Covered in |
|---|---|---|
| Note | Places a note with text on it. | 8-4 Notes |
| Sticker | Opens the sticker drawer. | 8-2 Placing and finding stickers |
| Photo | Places a photo from your photo library. | 8-5 Photos and drawings |
| Draw with Apple Pencil | Draws with Apple Pencil. Only on iPad. | 8-5 Photos and drawings |
| Favorites and recents row | Your favorite stickers and recently placed stickers gather here first. If you haven't placed anything yet, default emoji sit here. | 8-2 |
The brush button
The brush button floats on the month view screen. Drag the brush button to move it where you want, and it stays there next time.
What happens when you tap the brush button depends on the situation.
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| Situation | When you tap the brush button |
|---|---|
| You have Pro, and the calendar can be decorated | You enter decorating mode. |
| You don't have Pro | A brush with a lock appears. Tap it to open the purchase screen (“17-1 What is free and what Pro unlocks” in “Chapter 17 Free and Pro”). |
| “Only the owner decorates” is on in a shared calendar and you are a participant | A brush with a lock appears. Tap it to see “Only the person who made this calendar decorates it. You can still add and edit events and to-dos.” |
| A calendar you joined with “Can view” | There is no brush button. |
In a shared calendar, each person who decorates needs their own Pro. Who can decorate is explained in “7-5 Who can do what” in “Chapter 7 Sharing”.
Gestures in view mode and decorating mode
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| Gesture | View mode | Decorating mode |
|---|---|---|
| Tap a date cell | The sheet for that date opens. | “Pick a sticker or a note first” appears. If you have already picked a sticker, it is placed there. |
| Tap a placed note | The “Note” window opens, and you read the whole note. | The note is selected. |
| Tap a placed sticker | Same as tapping the date cell under it. | The sticker is selected, and the control bar appears. |
| Drag a selected sticker | The sticker moves. | |
| Drag on an empty spot or an unselected sticker | The page scrolls. | |
| Swipe sideways | Moves to another month. | The month does not change. |
| Pinch or spread two fingers | iPhone: pinch to go to the year view, spread to open the sheet for the date under your fingers. iPad and Mac: the page zooms. | On a selected sticker, that sticker's size changes. Elsewhere, the page zooms from 1x to 3x. |
When you zoom the page while decorating, a chip showing the current zoom, such as “2x · Original size”, appears near the top of the screen. Tap the chip to return to the original size. Decorating mode always starts at the original size when you open it again. On iPhone, the first time you enter decorating mode, “Spread two fingers to zoom in up to 3x. While zoomed in, drag to move around.” appears once.
8-2Placing and finding stickers
You pick stickers in the sticker drawer, which you open with the Sticker button on the decorating toolbar.
In decorating mode, tap the Sticker button. The sticker drawer opens.
Tap a sticker in the drawer. The drawer closes, and “Tap where you want it” and “Tap anywhere on the calendar or the MEMO pad to place it” appear.
Tap the spot where you want it on the calendar or the MEMO area. The sticker is placed there.
To stop placing, tap “Cancel” on the prompt band. Only the picked sticker is canceled, and you stay in decorating mode.
Tabs in the sticker drawer
Tap a tab at the top of the drawer to change the kind of sticker.
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| Tab | What's in it |
|---|---|
| “Make my stickers” | Stickers made from your own photos (8-3 Your photo stickers) |
| “Emoji” | All of the device's emoji. For emoji with skin tones, long-press to pick a tone. |
| “Originals” | Stickers drawn by Calliary. They are divided into themed sets. Tap “All” at the front to spread all sets out on one screen. |
| “Picture emoji” | Stickers that draw emoji as pictures |
| “Frames” | Border stickers with an open center that frame a date |
When you have favorite stickers or recently placed stickers, “Favorites” and “Recently used” rows appear at the top of the drawer. Long-press a sticker to add it to favorites, and long-press it again to remove it.
Turn on “White border”, and stickers from that tab are placed with a white border. The description is “When on, stickers you place get a white border.” Each of the “Emoji” · “Originals” · “Picture emoji” · “Frames” tabs has its own switch, and the border of stickers you already placed does not change. “Make my stickers” stickers are always placed with a white border, so that tab has no switch.
“World festivals”
The “World festivals” set in the “Originals” tab gathers festival stickers from 22 cultures. Inside the set, stickers are divided by culture under subheadings such as “Korean holidays”, “Japanese festivals”, “Christmas”, and “Halloween”. The culture that matches your device's region or language comes first, followed by “Christmas” and “Halloween”. The rest are in order by name.
Finding by name
Type a name in the “Search stickers” field at the top of the drawer, and matching stickers appear right away. You search by a sticker's name or a set's name, such as “bus” or “macaron”.
- Search uses words in the app's screen language and English words. In the app in Korean, the Korean word for cat and “cat” find the same sticker.
- Typing only the beginning of a word also finds it. “ca” finds the cat sticker, and in Korean, the search starts even while a Hangul letter is still being typed.
- Letters from the middle of a word don't find it. “at” does not find the cat sticker.
- Type two words with a space between them, and only stickers that have both words appear.
- You can also type an emoji. Type the cat-face emoji, and that emoji and the cat stickers appear together.
- In the app in Japanese, “ねこ”, “ネコ”, and “猫” give the same results.
Results appear in this order: “Make my stickers”, emoji, then Calliary stickers. A “Make my stickers” sticker appears when the name you gave it contains the letters you typed. If no sticker matches, “No stickers found” and “Try another name or tag.” appear. To erase what you typed, tap the clear button at the end of the field.
8-3Your photo stickers
Cut a person or an object out of your own photo to make a sticker. The stickers you make gather in the “Make my stickers” tab of the sticker drawer, and you can place them in any month as many times as you like. Photo stickers are part of Pro decorating.
In decorating mode, tap the Sticker button to open the sticker drawer.
Tap the “Make my stickers” tab. “Make your own stickers” appears at the top.
Tap “Add an image”. If you haven't made any stickers yet, tap “Make a cutout sticker”.
Pick a photo. The “Cutout sticker” screen opens.
Choose a shape in “Sticker style”.
Type a sticker name in the “Name” field. You find the sticker by this name.
Tap “Add”. The sticker goes into the “Make my stickers” tab.
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| “Sticker style” | Description |
|---|---|
| “Die-cut” | “Cuts out the subject and wraps it in a white border.” |
| “No background” | “Keeps the subject and makes the background transparent.” |
| “Original” | “Keeps the whole photo and adds a white border around it.” |
If no person or object to cut out is found in the photo, “No subject was found to cut out. We'll use the original.” appears, and the sticker is made in the original shape. If the photo can't be loaded, “This photo can't be loaded. Pick a different one.” appears.
Renaming and deleting
Below the “Make my stickers” tab, the number you made and the limit appear, as in “12 / 60 · Long-press to rename or delete”. You can make up to 60 stickers.
In the “Make my stickers” tab, long-press a sticker.
Tap “Rename” or “Delete”.
When deleting, tap “Delete” in the “Delete this sticker?” window.
Even if you delete it from the “Make my stickers” tab, “Stickers already placed on your calendar stay where they are.”
8-4Notes
A note is a piece of paper with text on it that you place on the calendar or the MEMO area.
Placing a note
In decorating mode, tap the Note button. The “Add a note” window opens.
Tap the preview card at the top and type your text (“Tap the card and type right on it.”).
Set the items below.
Tap “Done”. “Tap where you want it” appears.
Tap the spot where you want it on the calendar or the MEMO area.
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| Item | What you choose |
|---|---|
| “Style” | “Sticky note” or “Flag” |
| “Color” | One of mint, pink, lavender, cream, butter yellow, and baby blue, or “Pick a color yourself” |
| “Size” | Slide the bar between the “A” marks to change the note's text size. |
| “Font” | The note's font (free fonts and Pro fonts: “17-1 What is free and what Pro unlocks” in “Chapter 17 Free and Pro”) |
| “Countdown” | Turn on “Count the days” and choose “Day to count to”, and the D-day is written on the note too. Check how it looks now in the “As of today” row. “Past dates count up and upcoming dates count down.” |
On iPhone, while you write a note, the color and font rows appear together right above the keyboard.
Reading a note
In view mode, tap a placed note to open the “Note” window and read the whole note. Tap “Close” to close it. When you open a date, the stickers and notes placed on that date appear in the “Stickers & notes” section of the sheet, and tapping a note row also opens the same “Note” window.
Editing a note
In decorating mode, double-tap the note, or tap the note to select it and then tap the edit button on the control bar.
In the “Edit note” window, change the text and items.
Tap “Done”.
8-5Photos and drawings
Placing a photo
In decorating mode, tap the Photo button. Your photo library opens.
Pick the photo to place. “Tap where you want it” appears.
Tap the spot where you want it on the calendar or the MEMO area.
Like stickers, placed photos are selected, moved, resized, and deleted (8-6). To cut a photo out into a sticker, follow 8-3 Your photo stickers.
Drawing with Apple Pencil (iPad)
On iPad, you draw on the calendar and the MEMO area with Apple Pencil. Drawings also appear on iPhone and Mac, but you draw only on iPad.
In decorating mode, tap the Draw with Apple Pencil button.
“Drawing mode” and “Tap Done to go back to your schedule” appear near the top of the screen, and the pen toolbar appears.
Choose a pen and draw with Apple Pencil. A single stroke can continue across the calendar and the MEMO area.
To place stickers again, tap “Back to stickers”.
When you finish drawing, tap “Done”. You return to view mode.
While you are placing stickers, touching the screen with the tip of Apple Pencil switches straight to drawing.
8-6Selecting, moving, resizing, deleting, and undoing
You work with placed stickers, notes, and photos after selecting them in decorating mode.
In decorating mode, tap something you placed. A border and handles appear around the selected item, and the control bar appears.
Drag the selected item to move it.
Drag a handle to change the size and angle together. On iPhone and iPad, spreading or pinching two fingers on the selected item also changes its size.
Tap an empty spot to deselect.
The buttons on the control bar are as follows. The bar appears right below or above the selected item, and it stays the same size and within the screen even when zoomed.
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Edit | Edits a note. It is at the front only when a note is selected. |
| “Duplicate” | Makes another copy of the same item. |
| “Delete” | Deletes it. |
| “Send back” | Sends it behind other decorations. |
| “Forward” | Brings it in front of other decorations. |
Undoing a deletion
When you delete a sticker, note, or photo, one of “A sticker was deleted”, “A note was deleted”, or “A photo was deleted” appears at the bottom of the screen with “Undo” for 5 seconds. Tap “Undo”, and the deleted item comes back in the same spot.
- Only the last item you deleted can be undone. If you delete something new, the notice changes and the 5 seconds start again.
- If VoiceOver or Switch Control is on, the notice stays for 60 seconds.
- If that spot can no longer be decorated in the meantime, “Couldn't undo. You can't decorate here right now.” appears. If the calendar or diary entry is gone, “Couldn't undo. That calendar is no longer here.” or “Couldn't undo. That diary entry is no longer here.” appears.
When you open decorating mode again, it starts with nothing selected.
8-7The MEMO area
Below the calendar in the month view, there is a lined MEMO area. The calendar and the MEMO area are joined as one sheet of paper, so when you decorate, the two are not treated separately.
- Stickers, notes, and photos can be placed on the calendar, on the MEMO area, or across the border between the two. The prompt when placing also says “Tap anywhere on the calendar or the MEMO pad to place it”.
- A single stroke drawn with Apple Pencil can continue from the calendar into the MEMO area.
- Each month has its own MEMO area. What you place in this month's MEMO area appears only in this month.
8-8Clearing the sample decorations
If you chose to place samples in the guide at first launch, this month has sample stickers and notes. Sample decorations are saved to iCloud like real decorations, so they also appear on your other devices and on the web.
Open Settings ▸ “About”.
Tap “Clear the example decorations” in the “Help” group.
- Only the stickers and notes placed as samples are deleted.
- On devices that use the same iCloud, deleting them on any device removes them from all devices and the web.
- The “Clear the example decorations” row appears only while sample decorations remain.
The guide where you choose whether to place samples is explained in “2-2 The first launch” in “Chapter 2 Getting started”.
