Calliary

Chapter 11

Using Calliary on the web

How to view your Calliary calendar and edit events and to-dos in a browser on a computer or on someone else's device. This chapter covers, in order, what works on the web and what is app-only, when changes appear, and signing out.

11-1Opening the web and signing in

Calliary Web is at calliary.honeybeemobility.com. Sign in with the same Apple Account as the device you use the app on, and that account's Calliary calendar opens in the browser.

You can also find the web address in the app. In Settings ▸ “View on the web”, tap or click “Copy” on the “Web address” row to copy the address. This row shows even when “Show on the web” is off.

  1. Open calliary.honeybeemobility.com in a browser.

  2. Click the Apple sign-in button, “Sign in with Apple ID”.

  3. In the Apple sign-in window that opens, sign in with the same Apple Account as the app.

  4. The first time you sign in, “My calendar” opens to the current month.

The sign-in screen shows “Sign in to see your calendar” together with the note “This page shows the Calliary records saved in your own iCloud, read directly by your browser. Events and to-dos you edit here carry over to the app through iCloud. Your records never pass through our servers.”

The records the web reads and writes go directly between the browser and Apple iCloud (CloudKit). The Calliary website server only sends the files that make up the web pages.

If you check “Keep me signed in” in the sign-in window, you stay signed in for 2 weeks. On a computer that several people use, leave it unchecked (11-8 Signing out and shared computers).

11-2What works on the web and what is app-only

On the web you view your calendar, search it, and edit events and to-dos. Decorating and sharing settings happen in the app. The bottom of the web page also says “Events and to-dos you change on the web carry over to the app through iCloud. Decorating happens in the app.” and “Enter invite codes in the app.”

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

What works on the web and what is app-only
Works on the webApp-only
Viewing a month, moving to another month (“Go to month”)Decorating with stickers, notes, photos, and the pen (view-only on the web)
Clicking a date to see that day's events, to-dos, and diaryWriting and editing the diary (read-only on the web)
Finding titles, notes, and locations with “Search events and records”Joining a shared calendar with an invite code
Picking a category to see only its events (does not apply to to-dos or the diary)Creating a shared calendar, inviting people, managing sharing
Adding, editing, and deleting events (including all-day, anniversary, repeat, reminders, location, notes, and important events)Changing a custom repeat
Adding to-dos, marking them done, deleting themChanging the date of a lunar-calendar event
Changing calendars (“Switch calendar”)Moving an event to another calendar
Changing the screen language (“Language”)Editing long notes
Viewing the original picture of the decorated calendar (“View original”)Ringing event reminders (the web only shows the reminder time)

When you open the event editor on the web, fields you can change only in the app show the reason. For example, you see “You can change a custom repeat in the app.”, “You can change the date of a lunar-calendar event in the app.”, “You can move it to another calendar in the app.”, and “Long notes can be edited in the app.”

The “Reminders” field in event details also shows “They don't ring on the web”. Reminders ring in the Calliary app on your phone, iPad, or Mac.

When you open a view-only calendar, “This calendar is view-only” appears and you can't edit events or to-dos.

11-3“My calendar” and “Show on the web”

When you sign in on the web with the same Apple Account, “My calendar” always shows. You can see the events, to-dos, and diary in “My calendar” and edit events and to-dos. You don't need to turn on “Show on the web” for this.

“Show on the web” is the switch that uploads pictures of your decorated calendar to the web. It is in the app's Settings ▸ “View on the web” (row description “See and edit your calendar on the web”).

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

「My calendar」 and 「Show on the web」
“Show on the web”Calendars on the web (My calendar, shared calendars)
Off (default)You can see events, to-dos, and the diary and edit events and to-dos. Stickers, notes, and photos also show. Pen drawings do not show
OnIn addition to the above, decorated pictures of My calendar and of the shared calendars you created or joined go up and show (including pen drawings)

When it is off, the calendar shows “To see pen drawings here too, turn on "Show on the web" in the app's Settings, under View on the web.” below it.

Turning it on

  1. In the app, tap or click Settings ▸ “View on the web”.

  2. Turn on “Show on the web”.

  3. The “Last uploaded” row shows the upload time. If nothing has gone up yet, it shows “Not yet”.

  4. To upload right away, tap “Upload now”.

While it is on, the app uploads again each time you change your decorated calendar. The note on the screen says “When it's on, the decorated calendar pages for the past 12 months and the next 3 months go up a few seconds after you edit. Cycle, step, and health data never show on the web.”

The uploaded pictures are saved in your iCloud and use iCloud storage. They show only on the web when signed in with the same Apple Account as this device. “Why does Calliary work this way?” on the same screen explains why it works this way.

“Show on the web” is turned on and off separately on each device. It is off at first. If you reinstall the app, it is off again.

Turning it off

  1. In Settings ▸ “View on the web”, turn off “Show on the web”.

  2. “Stop showing on the web?” appears. It says “The decorated calendar pages you uploaded will be deleted. The events, to-dos, and diary in My calendar still show on the web, and you can keep editing events and to-dos there.”

  3. Tap or click “Turn Off and Delete” to turn the switch off and delete the uploaded pictures. “The web copy was deleted.” appears where “Delete web copy” was. Tap or click “Cancel” to leave it on.

Deleting the web copy

To delete only the uploaded pictures and keep the switch on, use “Delete web copy”.

  1. In Settings ▸ “View on the web”, tap or click “Delete web copy”.

  2. “Delete the web copy?” appears. It says “Every page that went up is removed from iCloud, and this device stops publishing.”

  3. Tap or click “Delete”, and “The web copy was deleted.” appears where the button was. “Show on the web” on this device also turns off.

If the deletion fails, “The web copy wasn't deleted. Try again.” appears.

11-4Shared calendars and viewing decorations

The web shows every calendar that Apple Account already has in the app. This includes the shared calendars you created and the calendars you joined with an invite code in the app.

  1. Click “Switch calendar” at the top of the web page.

  2. In the list, click the calendar to open.

The row description in the list tells you what kind of calendar it is.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

Shared calendars and viewing decorations
Row descriptionMeaning
“Your own schedule and records”My calendar
“Yours · Shared calendar”A calendar you created and share
“Yours · Not shared yet”A calendar you created but have not invited anyone to yet
“Joined · {name}'s calendar” or “Joined · Shared calendar”A calendar you joined in the app and can edit together
“View only · {name}'s calendar” or “View only · Shared calendar”A calendar you joined in the app and can only view

If you have only one calendar, “Only one calendar available” appears. A category someone shared with you does not get its own row; it shows inside “My calendar”.

How decorations show

The web draws stickers, notes, and photos in the same places as the app. When you add, move, or remove them in the app, the web follows at the next sync. Other members of the same calendar also see these decorations on the web.

Pen drawings show as the picture your app uploaded. The same goes for shared calendars. Pictures uploaded by another member do not appear when you view the calendar on the web. To see pen drawings too, turn on “Show on the web” on your device (11-3). Below the calendar, a note such as “Pen drawings show as the app last uploaded them ({ago}).” shows when the picture went up. In months where all decorations show as the picture the app uploaded, the note says “Decorations show as the app last uploaded them ({ago}).”

In a month the app uploaded a picture for, click “View original” to see one picture of that month as decorated in the app.

In the decoration list of the date window, stickers that have no picture on the web show as “App-only sticker”, and stickers that can't be read show as “Sticker not supported on the web”.

Names and authors

The web uses the same naming rules as the app. In a shared calendar, events someone else wrote show “Written by {name}” in the list row, and their nickname in the “Written by” field of event details. Events you wrote have no author row. If it is not known who wrote it, “No author shown” appears.

An event carries the nickname used when it was written. If you change your nickname, the new nickname shows from the next event you write.

When you try to delete an event someone else wrote, “{name} wrote this event. Deleting it removes it for everyone in this calendar.” appears first.

Diary

Your diary entries that you show in a shared calendar do not appear twice in the web's date window, counts, or search. Diary entries others show in a shared calendar appear with the “Shared by {name}” label. Handwritten drawings in the diary do not show on the web; “Handwritten drawings show only in the app” appears instead.

11-5When changes appear, and “Refresh”

An open web tab reads the calendar from iCloud again every 30 to 40 seconds while it is on screen. When you go to another tab or app and come back to this tab, it reads again right away.

Below the month bar, the last read time shows as “Updated just now” or “Updated 3 min ago”. While it reads, “Updating…” shows.

  1. To see the latest right away, click “Refresh” below the month bar.

  2. When “Updating…” ends, the new content shows on the calendar.

When changes made by someone else or on another device come in, “Changes from someone else have arrived.” or “Changes from another device have arrived.” appears.

Events and to-dos you edit on the web carry over to the app through iCloud. When they show in the app depends on that device's iCloud sync.

11-6Editing repeating events

When you edit a repeating event, every repeat changes together. When you delete one, you choose whether to delete only that date or the whole series. This rule is the same in the app and on the web.

Editing

  1. On the web, click a date that has a repeating event.

  2. Click the event, then click “Edit”.

  3. “This event repeats. Changes apply to every repeat.” shows at the top of the editor. Below it, “Selected date: {date}” and “Series starts: {date}” show.

  4. Change the fields you want and click “Save”.

The date fields in the editor hold the day the series first started, not the day you clicked. The editor also says “The date fields below show the day the series starts.”

Changing the date or the repeat end date

If you change the date or “End repeat” and save, “Change the dates of the whole series?” appears first.

  • If you change the date, “Every repeat moves, not only the selected date.” and “New series start: {date}” show.
  • If you change the repeat end date, “The whole series gets a new end date, not only the selected date.” and “New repeat end: {date}” show. If moving the end date earlier cuts off existing repeats, “Every repeat after this date is removed.” also shows.

Click “Change all” to save.

Turning off repeat

If you change the repeat to “Never” and save, “Turn off repeat?” appears. Check “Turning repeat off leaves a single event, and the record of the dates you dropped one by one is lost.” and “Remaining date: {date}”, then click “Turn off repeat”.

Deleting

  1. In the editor of a repeating event, click “Delete the repeating event”.

  2. “Delete this repeating event?” and “This event repeats. Choose whether to drop only this date or delete the whole series.” appear.

  3. To delete only that date, click “Delete only this one”. To delete every repeat, click “Delete all repeats”.

The date of a lunar repeating event (for example, “Mom's birthday”) and custom repeats can't be changed on the web. The editor shows “You can change the date of a lunar-calendar event in the app.” or “You can change a custom repeat in the app.”

11-7In a phone browser

In a phone browser, you use the web at the same address.

  • At phone width, event titles in calendar cells show in text of 11px or larger, up to two lines.
  • If you tap a date while zoomed in with two fingers, the date window opens to fit the zoomed view.
  • If you go back while a window such as a date, event, search, or calendar list is open, only that window closes and you stay in Calliary.
  • “Edit” in event details is right below the title.

Adding an event

  1. Tap “Add an event” at the top.

  2. Type a title in the title field. Pressing Enter does not save; it moves to the location field.

  3. Fill in the fields you need and tap “Save”.

“Add an event” opens on the day you have open. If no day is open, it opens on the day you last tapped in this month, and if there is none, on today's date. If you are viewing another month, it opens on the 1st of that month.

Title length

This rule is the same in computer browsers. Titles can be up to 500 characters in both the app and the web. The character count shows from 450 characters. If you go over, the extra characters are not entered and “Titles can be up to 500 characters. The extra characters were left out.” appears.

Notes on the web can be up to 50,000 characters. Past 45,000 characters the character count shows, and if you go over, “Notes can be up to 50,000 characters.” appears.

11-8Signing out and shared computers

The “Sign out” button is at the end of the Calliary logo bar at the very top of the page.

  1. Click “Sign out” at the end of the logo bar at the top.

  2. If some to-dos are not saved yet, “Some to-dos aren't saved yet. If you sign out, they will be lost. Sign out anyway?” appears first.

  3. When you sign out, you return to the sign-in screen.

When you click “Sign out” yourself, the copy of your calendar and the to-dos stored in this browser are deleted.

On a shared computer

On a computer that several people use, do the following.

  • Do not check “Keep me signed in” in the sign-in window. If you leave it unchecked, you stay signed in for 30 minutes. If you check it, you stay signed in for 2 weeks.
  • Click “Sign out” when you are done.

When you signed out in another tab

If you sign out in another tab of the same browser, this tab is signed out too. The screen shows “Signed out in another tab” and “This tab is signed out too. Sign in again to return to the month you were viewing.”

When your sign-in ends on its own

When the web session ends, “Signed out” and “Your web session expired. Sign in again to continue where you left off.” appear. Sign in again and the month you were viewing opens.

If you were writing an event, “The event you were writing is kept in this tab. Sign in again with the same account to get it back.” also appears. Sign in again with the same account and what you were writing comes back.

Even when the session ends on its own, the copy of your calendar in this browser is deleted. Only to-dos that were not sent remain, and they continue uploading when you sign in again with the same account. If a different account signs in on this browser, the remaining to-dos are deleted.

11-9What looks different from the app

In 1.0.1, the app and the web look different in the places below.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

What looks different from the app
WhereAppWeb
Reminders for all-day eventsDown to the time, per the app settings on the device (for example, 9 AM on the day)Down to the time if a reminder time uploaded by app 1.0.1 or later exists; otherwise only “On the day”
Holiday namesApp languageThe names are part of the month picture the app uploaded, so they stay in the app language of the device that uploaded it. Changing the web language does not change them
Holiday marksThe app draws them on that monthThe web does not calculate them itself. If the calendar you open has no picture for that month, it takes them from another calendar's picture on the same account; if no calendar has one, they do not show
Pen drawingsShown in place as drawnShown as the picture the app uploaded (“Pen drawings show as the app last uploaded them”)
Handwritten drawings in the diaryShown“Handwritten drawings show only in the app”
Event remindersRingOnly the time shows, with “They don't ring on the web”

Anniversary D-day counts and the author row of shared calendars show on the web as in the app. The anniversary countdown appears as “Anniversary · In 15d” in the date window, event list, and event details. “Today” appears on the anniversary itself.

Screen language and right-to-left languages

Choose the screen language with “Language” at the top of the web page. You can choose from 19 languages, and when you choose one, all buttons and notes, including “Switch calendar” and “Undo”, change to that language. If you choose Arabic, the web calendar is drawn from right to left.

First day of the week and colors

The first day of the week on the web follows the viewer's own app settings. If you use only the web without the app, the week starts on Sunday.

The background and accent color of the web page follow the theme of the open calendar by the same rules as the app. “My calendar” uses the theme uploaded by app 1.0.1 or later and also reflects the browser's light or dark mode.
