Calliary

Chapter 12

Sync and notifications

How your Calliary records move between devices, and what the app shows when the internet or iCloud is cut off. This chapter also covers how event alerts and medication reminders go off and how the “Notification log” builds up.

12-1Syncing between devices

Your Calliary records are stored in your iCloud, and iCloud connects your devices. Every iPhone, iPad, and Mac signed in with the same Apple Account shows the same calendars. The web (calliary.honeybeemobility.com) reads your records from the same iCloud.

Events, to-dos, diary entries, and decorations you edit on one device go up to iCloud and then reach your other devices. Changes in a shared calendar also reach the people you share it with. The iPhone and iPad apps receive the other person's changes even while they are in the background.

Unsent changes

If your changes have not gone up to iCloud yet, the app shows how many.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

Unsent changes
WhereWhat you see
Right below the calendar headerA small strip with the count, such as “3 unsent changes”. It disappears after 5 seconds. Tap or click it to close it right away.
Bottom of the Settings screenThe same line and “These will upload to iCloud soon.”. It stays until every change has gone up.
  • The strip appears when a change is still not uploaded 20 seconds after you save it.
  • A strip you closed appears again when the number of unsent changes grows or the status changes.
  • When every change has gone up, the line at the bottom of Settings disappears too.

Separate on each device

The settings and records below do not move through iCloud. They exist only on that device. On a new device, set them again.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

12-2Without an internet connection

Without an internet connection, you can still write and edit events, to-dos, and diary entries in Calliary. Your changes are saved on the device and go up to iCloud when you are connected again.

While the connection is down, changes that have not gone up yet show like this.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

When you are connected again and every change has gone up, the strip and the line at the bottom of Settings disappear. Changes the people you share with made in the meantime also arrive on your device at this point.

Some things need an internet connection.

12-3When iCloud is off

If you turn off iCloud for Calliary in the device settings, the copy on the device is cleared and your calendars look empty. When you turn it back on, Calliary downloads your records from iCloud again.

What the app shows

  • “iCloud is off, so your calendars look empty” appears above the calendar, along with where to turn iCloud on. This strip does not disappear by itself. Tap or click it to close it.
  • The same card stays at the bottom of the Settings screen for as long as iCloud is off.
  • If you try to join with an invite code in this state, “iCloud is off, so you can't join yet.” appears.

Turning it back on

  1. Turn on Calliary in the place the card names.

iPhone and iPad: “Turn on Calliary in Settings > Apple Account > iCloud.”

Mac: “Turn on Calliary in System Settings > Apple Account > iCloud.”

  2. When you return to Calliary, the card changes to “iCloud is on · Reopen Calliary”.

  3. Close Calliary and open it again.

iPhone and iPad: “Swipe Calliary away in the app switcher, then open it again to load your calendars.”

Mac: “Quit Calliary, then open it again to load your calendars.”

  4. When it opens again, Calliary loads your calendars from iCloud.

For the steps to check iCloud when you first install the app, see “2-1 Installing and checking iCloud” in “Chapter 2 Getting started”.

12-4Event alerts and notification permission

When you set an alert on an event, Calliary on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac alerts you at the time you chose. How to set an alert is explained in “4-5 Reminders” in “Chapter 4 Events”. This section covers the conditions for an alert to go off.

Notification permission

Every Calliary notification (events, medication, sharing) needs the device's notification permission. Calliary asks for permission at these times.

  • When the first-launch guide reaches the “Turn on notifications?” page (“2-2 The first launch” in “Chapter 2 Getting started”)
  • The first time you pick an alert in the event editor
  • The first time you save a medication reminder that is turned on (“12-5 Medication reminders”)
  • When you start sharing a calendar or join with an invite code (only while “Sharing notifications” is on)
  • When you tap the “Notifications are off” row in Settings ▸ Notifications

If you already allowed or declined, Calliary does not ask again.

Without permission, the “Notifications are off” row appears at the top of Settings ▸ Notifications. The row's description and what happens when you tap it depend on the state.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

Notification permission
StateRow descriptionWhen you tap it
Never asked yet“Tap here to turn on alerts for events, medication, and sharing.”The device's notification permission prompt appears.
Not allowed (iPhone and iPad)“Turn on Calliary notifications in Settings to get alerts for events, medication, and sharing.”The Calliary notification screen in the device settings opens.
Not allowed (Mac)“Turn on Calliary notifications in System Settings to get alerts for events, medication, and sharing.”The Notifications screen in System Settings opens.

Once you allow permission, this row disappears.

When permission is off, the “Reminders” field in the event editor also shows “Notifications are off” and “Turn on notifications for Calliary in Settings to get the reminders you pick here.”. Tap “Open Settings” to open the device settings.

Alert times for all-day events and anniversaries

All-day events and anniversaries have no time, so they alert you at a set time on the day. Set the times in Settings ▸ Notifications.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

Alert times for all-day events and anniversaries
RowDescription
“All-day event alert time”“The time all-day event alerts go off.”
“Anniversary alert time”“The time anniversary alerts go off.”

The starting values are 9 AM for all-day events and 12 PM for anniversaries. These times are set separately on each device. In the editor for an all-day event, the sentence “All-day events remind you at (time) on the day.” below the “Reminders” field shows the time currently set.

Where alerts go off

  • An alert goes off in Calliary on every iPhone, iPad, and Mac that received the event. Each device needs notification permission.
  • Below the alert field, “If the event is shared, participants get the same reminder.” is always shown. For a shared event, the same alert also goes off on the participants' devices.
  • The web does not sound alerts. Event details on the web show “They don't ring on the web”.

Calliary schedules the event alerts due in the next 30 days on your device in advance. If there are more than 60 alerts in those 30 days, it schedules the 60 nearest. Each time you open the app or an event changes, it updates the scheduled alerts.

Cycle tracking notifications are explained in “Chapter 14 Cycle tracking”, and activity notifications for shared calendars in “7-12 Sharing notifications and 「Notification log」” in “Chapter 7 Sharing”.

12-5Medication reminders

A reminder that tells you when to take your medication, every day or on the days you choose. Create it under “Medication reminders” in Settings ▸ Notifications. Below the group it says “A reminder at the time you set, so you don't forget to take it. You choose the name, the time, and the days it repeats.”

Tapping the “Medication reminders” row in the cycle tracking settings (“Daily medication and birth control pill reminders.”) opens the same screen.

Creating a medication reminder

  1. Tap or click Settings ▸ Notifications.

  2. Under “Medication reminders”, tap or click “Add medication reminder”. If you have none yet, the “Set a reminder for medication you take” row also appears.

  3. Type a name in “Name” (for example, Vitamins). Below the field it says “At the time you set, a notification arrives under this name.”

  4. In “Time”, pick the time for the reminder.

  5. In “Repeat”, pick “Every day” or “Pick days”. With “Pick days”, tap or click the days for the reminder in the day buttons below.

  6. Tap or click “Save”.

“Save” works only after you type a medication name. If you chose “Pick days”, pick at least one day. Otherwise “Pick at least one day to be reminded on.” appears.

What you can do in the list

Each row in the “Medication reminders” list shows the medication name, the time, and the repeat schedule.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
