2-1Installing and checking iCloud
Calliary saves your records in your iCloud. iCloud must be on for Calliary on the device where you installed it before you can do the following.
- See your calendar.
- Keep your records in step with your other devices.
- Join a shared calendar.
Get Calliary from the App Store on iPhone and iPad, or from the Mac App Store on Mac.
In the device's iCloud settings, check that Calliary is on. The app tells you where to look, as shown below.
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| Device | Where to turn on Calliary (app message) |
|---|---|
| iPhone, iPad | “Turn on Calliary in Settings > Apple Account > iCloud.” |
| Mac | “Turn on Calliary in System Settings > Apple Account > iCloud.” |
What the app shows when iCloud is off
- An “iCloud is off, so your calendars look empty” card appears above the calendar, with directions to where you turn it on.
- The same card also stays at the bottom of the Settings screen.
- If you try to join with an invite code in this state, “iCloud is off, so you can't join yet.” appears.
- On a device where iCloud is blocked by Screen Time or device management, “iCloud is restricted on this device. Check Screen Time or your device management settings.” appears.
After you turn it back on
When you turn iCloud back on for Calliary, the card changes to “iCloud is on · Reopen Calliary”. Close Calliary and open it again, and it loads your calendar from iCloud.
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| Device | How to reopen (app message) |
|---|---|
| iPhone, iPad | “Swipe Calliary away in the app switcher, then open it again to load your calendars.” |
| Mac | “Quit Calliary, then open it again to load your calendars.” |
2-2The first launch
Right after you first install the app, the nickname window, the first-run tour, the join card, and the gift card appear in turn, one at a time.
- The join card appears when you joined a shared calendar with an invite code (see “If you installed with an invite code” below).
- The gift card appears when a friend invite gift has opened. The person who invited sees “A friend joined you.”, and the person who was invited and joined sees “You joined a friend's calendar.” The gift itself is described in 7-13 Friend invite gift.
- If you came in through an invite during a friend invite event period, an event card appears after the gift card. It shows “Welcome to (inviter's name)'s calendar” and information about a 1-month pass code. The event itself is described in 7-13 Friend invite gift.
The nickname window
At first launch, the “What should we call you?” window appears. It explains “On a calendar you share, the events you write show this name. You can change it in Settings any time.”
Type the name you want to be called in the field (for example, “Sky”).
Tap or click “Start with this name”.
- To decide later, tap “Later” at the top right or swipe the window down to close it. On Mac, you can also close it with Esc. The app asks again the next time you open it.
- If the app finds a name you used before in iCloud, the “Is this your name?” window appears instead. Use that name with “Yes, use this name”, or type a new one with “Use a different name”.
- You can change the name later in Settings ▸ Manage sharing ▸ “My nickname”. The new name shows from the next event you write.
- The nickname is remembered separately for each Apple Account. If you switch Apple Accounts on one device, each account keeps the nickname set for it.
The first-run tour (the tour with Cally)
After the nickname window, the character “Cally” points out parts of the screen one at a time in speech bubbles. Tap “Next” in the bubble to go to the next step. Tapping outside the bubble does not move on. If you tap “Skip” before you have seen step 9, you jump straight to step 9. If you have already seen step 9, tapping “Skip” ends the tour.
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| Step | Title | What it points to · What it says |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | “Hi, I'm Cally!” | “Let's make a calendar that's one of a kind.” A “Join with an invite code” button is also there. |
| 2 | “Write events on a date” | Today's date cell. “Tap a date to write that day's events, to-dos, and diary.” |
| 3 | “Decorate with the brush” | The brush button. “Tap the brush, pick a sticker, then tap a spot and it lands right there. Spread two fingers on an empty spot to zoom in; tap a placed sticker to select it, then drag to move it. Brush decorating opens with Pro.” |
| 4 | “Want to see an example decorated month?” | “We'll stick a few stickers and notes on this month. If you don't like them, you can clear them all at once in Settings > About.” (see the example decorations section below) |
| 5 | “Shared calendar” | The calendar name. “Tap the calendar name to move between My calendar and the calendars you decorate together. Make one and invite people in Settings > Manage sharing. Got an invite code? Enter it in 'Join with an invite code' at the top of that screen.” |
| 6 | “Make it yours” | The Settings button. “Settings > Decorating is where the color theme, the icon set, and the font live. You can download more fonts there too.” |
| 7 | iPhone: “Widgets and Apple Watch” · iPad: “Widgets” | “Press and hold the Home Screen, tap + at the top left, and add a Calliary widget.” On iPhone, “Calliary is on your Apple Watch too — today's events, and your next one right on the watch face.” follows. |
| 8 | “Turn on notifications?” | “Calliary sends you notifications for your events, your medication times, and shared calendar updates.” Tap “Yes, turn on notifications” and the device's notification permission window appears. Tap “Later” to move on without turning on notifications. |
| 9 | “All set!” | “Send us bugs or things you'd like, and we'll reply within a day and fix them one by one. Let's get started!” “Start” returns you to the calendar, and “Send feedback” opens the “Contact developer” screen. |
If you installed with an invite code
Tap “Join with an invite code” on the first page of the tour. The tour pauses and you can enter the code right away. The tour pauses only this time; it starts again from the beginning the next time you open the app. After you join, the calendar opens as soon as it arrives on the device, and the “You joined this shared calendar and it's open now.” card appears. The detailed steps for entering a code are in 7-4 If you were invited.
Example decorations
At step 4 of the tour, you choose whether to place example stickers and notes on this month.
- “Yes, show me”: A few stickers and notes are placed on this month for you to see.
- “It's fine”: No examples are placed and the tour moves to the next step.
Example decorations are saved in iCloud like real decorations, so they also show on your other devices and on the web. To delete them, follow these steps.
Open Settings ▸ About.
Tap or click “Clear the example decorations” in the “Help” group.
- On devices that use the same iCloud, deleting them on any one device removes them from all devices and the web.
- The “Clear the example decorations” row shows only while example decorations remain.
- Tapping it deletes them right away, without a confirmation window.
Seeing the tour again
Tap “Take the tour with Cally again” in Settings ▸ About, and the first-run tour starts again from the beginning. On iPhone and iPad, Settings closes and the tour starts over the calendar.
On iPhone and iPad, the “Help” group also has a “Widget guide” row. Widgets are covered in Chapter 13.
2-3A tour of the calendar screen
When you open Calliary, the calendar screen opens in view mode. By default it opens on the calendar you viewed last. You change this per device in “Calendar to open first” under Settings ▸ Calendar display. Choose the calendar you viewed last, My calendar, or a specific shared calendar.
Top of the screen
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Calendar name | Tap it to open the calendar list and move between “My calendar” and shared calendars. |
| “Previous month” / “Next month” | Only on Mac and on iPads with a wide enough screen. Moves one month at a time. In year view these are “Previous year” / “Next year”. On iPhone, swipe sideways to change months. |
| “Go to today” | Returns to the month that contains today. |
| “Switch to month view” / “Switch to year view” | Switches between the month screen and the year screen. |
| “Search events” | Finds events by name. |

The Upcoming bar
The “Upcoming” bar floats near the bottom of the month screen.

- Tap the bar to open the date of that event.
- If there are no upcoming events, the bar does not show. It is also hidden in decorating mode and in year view.
The date sheet
Tap a date cell to open that date's sheet. The sheet gathers that day's events, “To-dos for this day”, diary, and placed stickers and notes (“Stickers & notes”).
Tap + at the top right to open the menu below.
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| Menu | Description |
|---|---|
| “Add an event” | “Plans, anniversaries, things to do” |
| “Log your period” (when cycle logging is on) | “Period, flow, symptoms, mood” |
| “Write a diary entry” | “Keep a record of your day” |
- On a date with nothing written, “Nothing recorded yet” and “Use + at the top right to add an event, a diary entry, or a log.” show.
- In a calendar you joined with “Can view” permission, there is no + button, and an empty date shows only “Nothing recorded yet”.
View mode and decorating mode
- View mode: The everyday screen. Tap a date to write and read. Tap a placed note to open the “Note” window and read it to the end.
- Decorating mode: Tap the brush button to enter it. “Decorating mode” and “Pick a sticker, then tap where it goes” appear on screen. Tap “Done decorating” to return to view mode.
- In drawing mode, “Drawing mode” and “Tap Done to go back to your schedule” appear.
- The brush button is a round button floating over the calendar. You can drag it to move it.
- When a free user taps the brush button, a screen showing what Pro includes opens. Decorating and drawing are covered in “Chapter 8 Decorating (Pro)”.
Gestures
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| Gesture | View mode | Decorating mode |
|---|---|---|
| Pinch in or out with two fingers | iPhone: switches between year, month, and day views. iPad and Mac: the page zooms between 1x and 3x. Spreading your fingers in year view opens the month view of the month under your fingers on any device. | On an empty spot, the page zooms between 1x and 3x. On a selected sticker, that sticker's size changes. |
| Swipe sideways | Changes the month. On Mac, use the “Previous month” / “Next month” buttons. | The month does not change. |
| Drag | A decorating mode gesture. | Dragging on a sticker that is not selected moves the page. Dragging a selected sticker moves the sticker. |
| While zoomed in | A decorating mode gesture. | A chip showing the current zoom, such as “2x · Original size”, appears at the top of the screen. Tap it to return to the original size. |
| Double-tap while zoomed in | A decorating mode gesture. | Returns to the original size. |
Each time you open decorating or drawing, it starts at the original size (1x). On iPhone, the first time you enter decorating mode, the note “Spread two fingers to zoom in up to 3x. While zoomed in, drag to move around.” appears.
2-4Settings map
The Settings screen is divided into five groups. On iPhone, open it with the Settings button on the calendar screen.

- When there are changes that have not gone up to iCloud yet: the number of unsent changes and “These will upload to iCloud soon.”
- When iCloud is off for Calliary: “iCloud is off, so your calendars look empty”
- If there are changes that could not be sent while the internet was down, the same row also appears above the calendar for 5 seconds. If there are no changes to send, nothing appears even while offline. Sync is covered in “Chapter 12 Sync and notifications”.
Differences on iPad and Mac
On iPad and Mac, Settings shows a list of rows on the left (the sidebar) and its contents on the right. On Mac, open the Settings window with ⌘,.
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| iPhone | iPad and Mac |
|---|---|
| One “Decorating” row | Two rows: “Calendar decoration” and “App UI design” |
| One “Cycle” row (subtitle “Logging, predictions, sharing”) | The “Cycle” row in the sidebar has no subtitle. “Cycle notifications” and “Cycle sharing” appear as separate rows below it. “Cycle notifications” shows when cycle logging is on; “Cycle sharing” shows when logging is on or when you have a cycle shared with you. |
| “Manage sharing” opens as a separate screen | “Manage sharing” opens as a page inside the Settings window. |
| The “Calendar display” subtitle includes steps | “Calendar display” on Mac has no steps. |
| “Manage subscription” in “Calliary Pro” opens Apple's subscription management window inside the app (the same on iPad) | “Manage subscription” on Mac goes to the App Store. |
- Each inner screen of Settings on iPad has “Close”, which closes all of Settings at once.
2-5The first launch on Mac
On Mac, Calliary shows a single welcome panel in the center instead of speech-bubble guidance. The nickname window appears first, followed by the welcome panel. The nickname window is the same as in 2-2 The first launch. On Mac, close it with “Later” or Esc.
The welcome panel contains the following.
- At the top: “Hi, I'm Cally!” · “Let's make a calendar that's one of a kind.”
- Four guide cards:
If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
| Card | Text |
|---|---|
| “Write your plans” | “Tap a date to write that day's events, to-dos, and diary.” |
| “Decorate with the brush” | “Pick a sticker with the brush button, then click the spot on the calendar. Brush decorating opens with Pro.” |
| “Decorate together” | “Make a shared calendar in Settings > Manage sharing, or join one with an invite code you received.” |
| “Make it yours” | “Settings > Decorating is where the color theme, the icon set, and the font live. You can download more fonts there too.” |
- Notification card: “Turn on notifications?” and “Get alerts for events, shared calendars, and medication.” show. Click “Yes, turn them on” and the Mac's notification permission window appears.
- If you allow it, the card changes to “Notifications are on”.
- If you did not allow it, “Notifications are off” and “Turn on Calliary notifications in System Settings to get alerts for events, medication, and sharing.” show, and “Open Settings” opens System Settings.
- If the request fails, the reason the Mac gave and “Try again” show.
- At the bottom: “Send us bugs or things you'd like, and we'll reply within a day and fix them one by one. Let's get started!” with “Send feedback” and “Start”.
The body of the panel scrolls, and “Start” stays fixed at the bottom.
Read the panel and click “Start”. The panel closes and the calendar appears.
To send feedback to the developer right away, click “Send feedback”. The panel closes and the “Contact developer” screen opens in the Settings window.
- Closing the panel with the close button at its top right also takes you to the calendar, as “Start” does. However you close it, the panel does not appear again.
- The panel appears once, at first launch. To see it again, click “Take the tour with Cally again” in Settings (⌘,) ▸ About.
