Chapter 14

Cycle tracking

How to turn on cycle tracking, keep daily logs and basal temperature, and read predictions and insights. Then, in order: the Health app connection, sharing with others and receiving a share, notifications and hiding Lock Screen text, and deleting records.

14-1Turning it on

Cycle tracking is off at first. The logging screen and the calendar marks appear only for people who turn it on themselves. If you haven't turned tracking on, the “Log your period” item does not appear on your day sheet. A cycle someone else shares with you shows even if you haven't turned tracking on (“14-6 Viewing a received share”).

Where the cycle settings are depends on the device.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

Turning it on
DeviceWhere to open it
iPhoneSettings ▸ “Cycle” (row description “Logging, predictions, sharing”). Logging, predictions, notifications, and the sharing link are on one screen.
iPad and Mac“Cycle” in Settings. When you turn tracking on, “Cycle notifications” and “Cycle sharing” appear separately below it. If someone shares a cycle with you, “Cycle sharing” shows even if you haven't turned tracking on.
  1. Open Settings ▸ “Cycle”.

  2. Turn on the “Cycle tracking” switch (description “Off by default · Tracks only when you turn it on”).

  3. The “Track your cycle?” window opens. It lists three promises.

“Kept on this device and your iCloud only”: “The cycle data you log is encrypted and kept only on this device and in your private iCloud. Records imported from the Health app are kept on this device only.”

“Estimates are for reference”: “Expected period, fertile window, and ovulation dates are estimates built from your records, so they can differ from what happens. Don't use them for birth control.”

“You decide whether to share”: “You can share your dates with anyone you choose.”

  4. Under “Last period start date”, tap “Choose a date” and pick the date. If you don't remember the date, turn on “I don't remember”.

  5. Tap “Get started”.

“Last period start date” is empty at first. You can't pick a date after today. If you tap “Get started” without picking a date or turning on “I don't remember”, “Choose when your last period started. If you don't remember, turn on “I don't remember”.” appears and you don't move on.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

Turning it on (2)
What you choseAfter you start
A date“Tell us the date and the first estimate is ready right away. It starts from a 28-day cycle and gets more accurate as your records build up.” One period is logged starting from that date. The log runs only through today; days that haven't come yet show only as estimates.
“I don't remember”“Log your first period and the estimate starts from there.” You start with no records.

Tap “Maybe later” and the window closes; cycle tracking stays off.

How your cycle data is handled is set out in “Privacy details” at the bottom of Settings ▸ “Cycle”. Cycle records do not appear on the Calliary web.

14-2Daily logs and basal temperature

A daily log keeps things like whether you had your period that day, the flow, symptoms, mood, and basal temperature on one screen. In the screen's own words: “Log your period, symptoms, and mood all in one place.”

Where to open the logging screen

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

Where to open the logging screen
WhereWhat to tap
A date on the calendarTap the date to open the day sheet, then “Add” ▸ “Log your period” at the top (description “Period, flow, symptoms, mood”)
A day you already loggedThe “Period log” or “How you felt today” card on the day sheet
The cycle mark on the calendarTap the small mark at the top right of a date cell to open that day's cycle sheet. Tap “Log this day” there (“Edit this day's log” on a day you logged).
Cycle home“Today's log” (“Edit today's log” on a day you logged)

To open Cycle home, tap the summary card at the top of Settings ▸ “Cycle”, or tap “See more in Cycle home” on the cycle sheet.

In a shared calendar you can only view, the day sheet has no “Add”. Log from Cycle home or from your own calendar instead.

Fields on the logging screen

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

Fields on the logging screen
FieldWhat it holds
“Period”The “I had my period on this day” switch. Turn it on and choose the flow: “Light”, “Medium”, or “Heavy”.
“You log these often”“Tap a symptom you log often to add it right away.”
“Today's mood”“Rough”, “Down”, “So-so”, “Good”, “Great”. “Tap again to clear it.”
“Today's symptoms”Pick several symptoms such as “Cramps” and “Headache”. “Pick as many symptoms as you felt. Logging the days you felt fine helps you see how your body changes.”
“Other symptoms (optional)”Type a symptom that isn't in the list.
“Discharge (optional)”Choose what that day's discharge looked like. Tap your choice again to clear it.
“Your day”The “Sex” switch (turn it on to choose the “Contraception” method) and the “Spotting” switch. “Log sex and you can log the contraception you used with it. You can also log spotting between periods.”
“Basal temperature (optional)”See “Basal temperature” below.
“Note (optional)”“Even when you share your cycle with someone, your notes stay with you.”

During the expected fertile window or on the expected ovulation day, an “Any ovulation signs?” field appears at the top so you can pick “Egg white discharge” and “Breast tenderness” right there. Around the expected period, “If your period started, turn on the period check above.” appears.

When you're done, tap “Save”.

How a period continues

Log your period by turning on “I had my period on this day” for each day. Turn it on for adjoining days and they count as the same period. The day sheet and Cycle home show which day it is, as in “Period day 2”.

Basal temperature

In “Basal temperature (optional)”, enter the temperature you took right after waking up, in Celsius. The screen says “Log the basal body temperature you take right after waking and the ovulation estimate gets more accurate. Turn on Health app sync and it can fill in on its own.”

  • The empty field shows “e.g. 36.5” in gray. This text is an example, not a saved value.
  • You can enter values from 30 to 45. If you enter a number outside that range, “Enter a number between 30 and 45.” appears and you can't tap “Save”.
  • If you clear a saved temperature and save, it asks “Clear the temperature log?” first.
  • A temperature imported from the Health app can't be deleted in Calliary. On those days, “Values imported from the Health app can only be deleted in the Health app.” appears at the bottom of the screen.

How temperature is used in the ovulation calculation is in “14-3 Predictions and insights”.

14-3Predictions and insights

Calliary predicts your next period, fertile window, and ovulation day from your records. In the app's own words: “Estimates are for reference. Don't use them for birth control.”

Marks on the calendar

Your cycle is marked with a small dot at the top right of the date cell. Logged period days get a dark dot; predicted days get a pale dot. Tap the mark to open that day's cycle sheet, which tells you what the day is, such as “Period logged”, “Period expected (estimate)”, “Fertile window expected on this day”, or “Ovulation expected on this day”.

Change how the marks look in the “Estimates” group of Settings ▸ “Cycle”. Below the group it says “Expected period, fertile window, and ovulation dates are marked on the calendar, on this device only.”

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

Marks on the calendar
SwitchWhat it does
“Show expected dates”Turn it off and the expected dates disappear from the calendar; only logged days show.
“Vivid marks”“Small by default · On: filled period circle, deep mint ovulation, pale mint fertile band”
“Show in Year view too”“Off by default · Marks show on the small calendars in Year view as well”

Summary card

The “My cycle” card at the top of Settings ▸ “Cycle” and Cycle home bring together where things stand now.

  • “Next period estimate” with the date, and a margin of error such as “It could be off by about ±3 days”
  • Averages such as “Average cycle 29 days” · “Period 5 days”
  • With only one record: “This estimate uses the default 28-day cycle. It gets more accurate as your records build up.”
  • When your cycle swings: “Your cycles have been varying lately. Give the expected date some room.”

If the expected date has passed with no log, the card changes to something like “3 days late”. Once the expected date is overdue by the margin of error, “It has been 3 days since the expected date, so the next estimate is on hold. Log your period and it is calculated again.” appears, and no next estimate is given until you log a new period.

If your recent cycles keep coming out short or long, the card also shows “Your recent cycles have been repeating shorter than 21 days. That can be a signal worth checking, so consider seeing a gynecologist.” or “Your recent cycles have been repeating longer than 38 days. That can be a signal worth checking, so consider seeing a gynecologist.”

The “Your cycles differ a lot” card

When the standard deviation of your recent cycles is 7 days or more, the “Your cycles differ a lot” card appears. A single record with a wrong date can cause this, so the card gives you two buttons.

  • “Review my records”: Open your records and fix the day you entered wrong.
  • “It's fine”: Close the card. If your records change and are judged irregular again, the card appears again.

“Cycle values” and the luteal phase

“Cycle values” in Settings ▸ “Cycle” shows your average cycle and period length, with “Calculated from your records.” You don't set the cycle length yourself.

You can change “Luteal phase length” yourself. “Used to calculate the ovulation day. It is the stretch from ovulation to the day before your next period starts. It is usually 14 days — change it if you have measured your own.” Set it anywhere from 8 to 17 days; after you set it yourself, tap “Calculate automatically” to return to the original state.

“How the estimate is calculated”

“How the estimate is calculated” in Settings ▸ “Cycle” lists every rule the calculation uses.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

「How the estimate is calculated」
ItemWhat the app says
“It starts from defaults”“With no records yet, the calculation uses the defaults: a 28-day cycle, a 5-day period, and a 14-day luteal phase. One last period start date is enough for a first estimate.”
“It learns as records build up”“Cycle length comes from a weighted median of your last 12 cycles, with the recent ones weighted more. Older records count for less and less.”
“The margin of error is shown too”“How much your cycle swings (the standard deviation) is shown as ± days. Read the expected date as a range, not as a single day.”
“How ovulation day is calculated”“Estimated ovulation = next expected period − luteal phase length. The luteal phase is 14 days by default, and setting it anywhere from 8 to 17 days applies right away.”
“Basal temperature adds accuracy”“When your temperature stays 0.2°C or more above the baseline for 3 days running, that counts as ovulation, and the measurement wins over the calculated day.”
“We tell you when cycles differ a lot”“A cycle standard deviation of 7 days or more counts as irregular, and we tell you to treat the expected date as a reference.”
“Past the date, no pretending”“When the expected date is past by the margin of error, the card switches to how many days late it is, and the next estimate is on hold until a new record comes in.”

On a day when basal temperature confirms ovulation, the cycle sheet shows “Ovulation confirmed (basal body temperature)”.

Cycle insights

In “Cycle insights” on Cycle home (description “See your cycle length, period length, and regularity as charts”), you see your records as charts.

  • “Cycle length trend”: “Older records are on the left, recent ones on the right. The pale band is how much your cycle swings.”
  • “Period length”: “How many days each period ran, gathered from your records.”
  • “Cycle regularity”: Tells you something like “Your cycles have been running fairly regularly.” or “Your cycles have been varying lately.”

The charts appear only after you log two or more periods. Before that, “Log two or more periods and we will chart your cycle length trend and regularity. For now, keep logging.” appears. The bottom of the screen says “These insights are for reference, based on your records.”

Cycle home also has the “Recent periods” and “Recent symptoms and mood” lists. If you use an Apple Watch, the note “Pin down ovulation with overnight wrist temperature from Apple Watch” appears (“Series 8 and later · Keep sleep tracking on and wrist temperature refines the estimate on its own”).

14-4Health app connection

When you turn on Health app sync, the cycle records you enter in Calliary are also saved to the Apple Health app, and the same items from the Health app and Apple Watch are read in and shown together. The connection works on iPhone and iPad. Mac has no Health app, so this connection is not available there.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

Health app connection
DirectionItems
Calliary → Health appPeriod logs, spotting, sex, cervical mucus, basal temperature, symptoms (the 12 that have a matching item in the Health app), mood
Health app → CalliaryThe same items, plus overnight wrist temperature (Series 8 and later) and contraception

Turning it on

  1. Open Settings ▸ “Cycle”. On iPad, open “Cycle” in Settings.

  2. Turn on “Health app sync” (description “Keeps your cycle in step with Apple Health and Apple Watch”).

  3. On the “Connect to the Health app?” notice, tap “Continue”.

  4. The Health app asks which items to allow. Choose the items to allow.

If you have already set Health access on this device, it turns on right away with no prompt. Change the access later with “Change permission in the Health app” (description “In the Health app, go to your profile → Apps → Calliary to change each item.”).

“Sync now” and the result line

Tap “Sync now” and records come in from the Health app right away. While it syncs, “Syncing…” shows; when it finishes, a result line appears below.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

「Sync now」 and the result line
Result lineMeaning
“12 days imported · just now”That many days came in from the Health app.
“Nothing to import from the Health app · just now”There were no new records to import.
“Couldn't read from the Health app. Access may be off · just now”Check the read access.
“Couldn't check the Health app just now. Unlock your device and try again · just now”Unlock the device and tap it again.
“Health access isn't set on this device yet. Tap “Sync now” to choose.”Tap “Sync now” and it asks for access.
“Writing to the Health app is off, so what you log here isn't saved there.”In the Health app, turn on write access for Calliary.

If you allowed only the last 30 days in the Health app, “Health access is limited to the last 30 days. To bring in older records, change the permission in the Health app.” appears.

Imported records

  • Period days imported from the Health app carry a “Health app” mark on the logging screen.
  • If you log the day right after a Health app period day in Calliary, it counts as the same period.
  • Records read from the Health app are stored on this device only and are not uploaded to iCloud. Even when you share your cycle, these records do not go to the other person.
  • Notes stay in Calliary only.

Turning it off

When you turn off “Health app sync”, it asks “Turn off Health app sync?” first. When you turn it off, “Records imported from the Health app will be removed from Calliary. They stay in the Health app, and turning sync back on imports them again.” Records Calliary saved to the Health app stay in the Health app.

14-5Sharing: three scopes and what the other person sees

You can show your cycle to someone else. Sharing works with an invite code. The other person sees only the scope you choose, and the detailed daily logs are never passed on, whatever the scope.

Open the sharing screen from these places.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

Sharing: three scopes and what the other person sees
DeviceWhere to open it
iPhoneSettings ▸ “Cycle” ▸ “Cycle sharing”
iPad and Mac“Cycle sharing” in Settings
All devicesSettings ▸ Manage sharing ▸ “Cycle sharing”

The top of the screen says “You can manage this share from Manage sharing as well.” If cycle tracking is off, “Cycle tracking is off. You can share once you turn cycle tracking on.” appears and you can't share.

Starting to share

  1. On the “Cycle sharing” screen, tap “Share your cycle with someone”.

  2. On the “Create an invite code” screen, set the expiry, number of people, and password, and create the code.

  3. Send the code to the other person.

  4. The other person enters the code under “Join with an invite code” in the Calliary app.

Creating, sending, and canceling a code work the same as in “7-3 Inviting people” of “Chapter 7 Sharing”. To create a code you need a device signed in to iCloud. On a device that isn't signed in, “You can share your cycle with someone from a device signed in to iCloud.” appears. If you try to close without copying or sending the code, it tells you “You can see this code again later in “Cycle sharing”.”

Three scopes

When you start sharing, the scope is “Next period only” at first. After sharing, widen or narrow the scope again under “Show them more”.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

Three scopes
ScopeWhat the other person sees
“Next period only”“They only see your next expected period.” Only the next expected date and its length are sent.
“Cycle summary too”“They see your next expected period and your cycle summary (the recurring estimate).”
“Full history”“They see your past period history and your ovulation and fertile window estimates.”

Some things never go to the other person, whatever the scope.

  • Detailed daily logs such as symptoms, mood, discharge, sex, and basal temperature
  • Notes (“Even when you share your cycle with someone, your notes stay with you.”)
  • Records imported from the Health app

Whether you have turned on Health app sync is not sent to the other person in any scope.

The bottom of the screen also says “You're sharing your cycle with someone.”, a description of the current scope, and “Only you see your detailed daily logs. You can stop sharing at any time.”

Checking the sharing status

While you're sharing, the “Cycle sharing” screen shows who receives it.

  • “Sky can see your cycle”: The recipient's name shows.
  • “Someone can see your cycle”: Shown when the name isn't known.
  • “Waiting”: A code you created that nobody has used yet. Withdraw it with “Cancel this code”.

The “Cycle sharing” row in Settings ▸ “Cycle” shows “Sharing” when you share and “You haven't shared it with anyone yet” when you don't.

To keep any more codes from being created, turn on “Lock out new people”. People who already see your cycle keep seeing it (“7-10 Stopping” in “Chapter 7 Sharing”).

Stopping sharing

  1. On the “Cycle sharing” screen, tap “Stop sharing”.

  2. In the “Stop sharing?” window, tap “Stop sharing”. The window says “They can't see your cycle anymore. Your own records stay as they are.”

  3. “Sharing stopped” appears. “Your cycle disappears from their device the next time it syncs.”

If it can't stop because there is no internet connection, “Couldn't stop sharing” and “Cycle sharing didn't stop. Check your network connection and try again.” appear. Check the connection and tap it again.

14-6Viewing a received share

When someone shares their cycle with you, you see as much of it as they chose, on your own calendar. You don't need to turn on cycle tracking for yourself to receive one.

Receiving

  1. Enter the code you received under Settings ▸ Manage sharing ▸ “Join with an invite code”.

  2. Check that the join card's title is “Cycle sharing”, then join.

The detailed steps for joining are the same as in “7-4 If you were invited” of “Chapter 7 Sharing”.

Hearts on the calendar

A received cycle shows on the calendar as hearts. They are drawn separately from the dots of your own cycle.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

DotYour own cycle
Pink heartTheir shared period
Mint heartTheir shared ovulation and fertile window (when they share with “Full history”)

Tap a heart and that day's sheet shows the other person's information. “This came from them, so you can't edit it here.” On a day with nothing shared, “Nothing was shared for this day.” appears.

The “Cycle shared with you” screen

Received cycles are gathered here.

  • The “Cycle shared with you” group in Settings ▸ “Cycle”
  • Settings ▸ Manage sharing ▸ “Cycle shared with you” (description “See the cycle shared with you”)

There is one card for each person who shares with you.

  • The name of the person who shared, as in “Sky's cycle”
  • The scope they chose, as in “Shared scope: Next period only”
  • “Next period estimate” with the date, and “This is an estimate calculated from the average cycle.”
  • If there is nothing to calculate from yet: “There isn't enough information yet to estimate the next one.”
  • If the expected date has passed: “Their expected date passed 3 days ago. They may not have logged it yet.”
  • When you first receive it: “Newly shared”

Receiving from more than one person

The calendar draws hearts for one person only. If you receive shares from two or more people, choose in “Who to show on the calendar”. The screen says “The calendar draws one person's hearts. The others still show on the day sheet and on their card below.”

14-7Notifications and hiding Lock Screen text

Cycle notifications tell you about your next period, fertile window, ovulation, and logging on the expected dates. Notifications are off at first.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

“Reminder time” is 9:00 AM at first. Below the group it says “You hear about your next period, fertile window, ovulation, and logging on the expected dates. Reminders start once a few records have built up.”

If notification permission is off, “Notification permission is off. Turn on Calliary notifications in your device settings.” appears. Turn on Calliary notifications in the device's Settings app.

Hiding Lock Screen text

“Hide wording on the Lock Screen” is the “Hides period wording on the Lock Screen (example: “The day is coming up.”)” switch. It is on from the start. While it is on, the notification title is “Calliary” and the notification does not use the words period, fertile window, or ovulation.

Widgets and Apple Watch

Cycle information can also appear in widgets and on watch faces. In both cases it shows only when you have turned on cycle tracking and added the widget or complication yourself.

  • Widgets: Turn on “Discreet mode” in Settings ▸ “Cycle”. The description says “A widget hides the words period and cycle and keeps only dates, numbers, and marks. Calendar marks and graphs still show.” On the one-page widget, cycle information shows only after you turn on “Show cycle info”.
  • Apple Watch: A watch face is easy for others to see, so there are two steps. Cycle data is not sent to the watch until you turn on cycle tracking and add the complication to the watch face yourself.

How to add widgets and complications is in “Chapter 13 Widgets and Apple Watch”.

14-8Deleting records

There are three ways to delete, depending on how much you remove. Deleted records can't be restored.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.
