Calliary

Chapter 15

Moving from another calendar

How to bring events from Apple Calendar, Google Calendar, or a calendar file (.ics) into Calliary in one go, and how the date range, repeating events, and holidays are handled.

15-1Importing from Apple Calendar, Google Calendar, and .ics

Importing reads the events of another calendar once and copies them into Calliary. Imported events go into “My calendar”, and from then on you decorate and edit them as Calliary events. Changes you make in the original calendar after importing do not follow into Calliary. If you import again, events already imported are skipped.

Opening the import screen

Tap or click Settings ▸ “Import events” (row description “Bring events from Apple, Google, or an .ics file”). “Import from another calendar” inside Settings ▸ “Manage sharing” opens the same screen. On Mac, “Import events” is at the end of the “Calendar” group in the Settings window sidebar.

If you have no categories at all, “Manage sharing” shows an “Already keeping a schedule somewhere?” card. Tap “Import” to open the import screen, or tap “Later” to make the card go away. After you tap either one, the card doesn't appear again on that device.

On the first screen, choose where to import from under “Bring your schedule over as it is”.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

Importing from Apple Calendar

  1. Tap “From Apple Calendar”.

  2. Allow access in the window that asks for calendar access.

  3. Under “Calendars to import”, check the calendars to import.

  4. Under “Date range”, choose how far back to go (see “15-2 What gets imported, and holidays”).

  5. Under “Sort into categories”, choose the category each calendar goes into.

  6. Check the count at the bottom and tap the button with the count on it, such as “Import 12 events”.

Apple Calendar's default calendars and account names appear as names like “Home”, “Work”, “Other”, and “Subscribed”, and new categories take those names too.

Importing from Google

  1. Tap “From Google”.

  2. Tap “Sign in with Google” and sign in with your Google account. The screen says “Calliary reads your Google Calendar events once and copies them over. Your sign-in is used for this import only.”

  3. On the same screen as for Apple Calendar, choose the calendars, date range, and categories, and import.

The sign-in is used for this import only. To import again later, sign in again.

Importing from a file (.ics)

  1. Tap “From a file (.ics)”.

  2. Choose the .ics file in the file window.

  3. Choose the calendars, date range, and categories, and import.

Sort into categories

In “Sort into categories”, each calendar starts as “New category”. A new category keeps the original calendar's name and color. You can also choose an existing category to merge into. Categories are covered in “4-7 Categories” of “Chapter 4 Events”.

When the import finishes

The “Import finished” screen shows the results as numbers.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

When the import finishes
RowMeaning
“Imported”Events newly brought in
“Already here, skipped”Events not added because they are already in Calliary
“Repeats as individual events”Separate events, one per date, because the repeat rule couldn't be carried over as it was
“Already a Calliary holiday, skipped”Events not added because they overlap a Calliary holiday

The three rows other than “Imported” appear only when they have a count. If the same event is in two of the calendars you chose, it is imported once, and the other copy is not counted in “Already here, skipped”.

The bottom of the screen shows “The imported events are in My calendar now. Decorate and manage them in Calliary from here on.” If some events had invalid dates, the count appears too, as in “3 events with invalid dates weren't imported.”

15-2What gets imported, and holidays

Date range

“Date range” sets how far back into the past to go. Whatever you choose, future events are imported from today up to 20 years ahead. The screen also says “Everything from the date you picked up to today, plus everything in the next 20 years, comes over. Repeating events keep their own rule.”

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

Date range
“Date range”Past events imported
“Past year” (initial setting)From today back to 1 year ago
“Past 6 months”From today back to 6 months ago
“Past 3 months”From today back to 3 months ago
“All”From today back to 20 years ago

When you change the date range or the calendars you chose, the “Events to import” count at the bottom is counted again. The “Already here, will skip” and “Already a Calliary holiday, will skip” rows appear only when they have a count.

Repeating events

A repeating event comes in as one repeating event with its original repeat rule. Repeating events in Calliary are covered in “4-4 Repeating events” of “Chapter 4 Events”. Events whose repeat rules Calliary can't keep as they are come in as separate events, one per day, on their original dates. In that case the screen shows the count, as in “Calliary can't hold some repeat rules as they are, so 4 of them come over as individual events. The dates stay the same.”

Repeating events that come in as separate events come in for 5 years only. If such a repeating event runs longer than 5 years, a note appears, as in “2 repeating events can't keep their rule, so 5 years of each come over as individual events. Later dates stay behind.”

Holidays

Calliary shows holidays on its own. If Calliary's holiday display is on, another calendar's holiday subscription is not checked at first in “Calendars to import”, and “Calliary already shows holidays, so this one starts unchecked.” appears below it.

Even if you check a holiday calendar yourself, all-day events with the same date and name as a Calliary holiday are skipped. If the holiday display is off, holiday subscriptions are checked from the start and nothing is skipped. Below a holiday calendar you checked, “Holidays Calliary already shows are left out.” appears, and the number to be skipped shows in the “Already a Calliary holiday, will skip” row. Calliary's holiday display is covered in “3-6 Holidays, lunar dates, and weather” of “Chapter 3 The calendar screen and display settings”.
