Calliary

Chapter 1

Calliary at a glance

What Calliary does, the names used throughout this guide, where your records are stored, where free ends and Pro begins, and the devices you can use.

1-1What you can do with Calliary

Calliary is an app for writing down your plans and decorating your calendar. Tap or click a date to write that day's events, to-dos, and diary.

There are four main things you do in Calliary.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

What you can do with Calliary
What you doWhat it coversChapter

Calliary also has cycle tracking, widgets, notifications, importing events from other calendars, and an app lock. For an overview of every feature, see 2-4 Settings map.

1-2Names to know

This guide uses the names below with the same meaning they have on the app's screens.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

Names to know
NameMeaning
“My calendar”The default calendar each person has. It is never shared as a whole.
“Shared calendar”A calendar you create and invite people to. Events, stickers, notes, and photos look the same for everyone.
“Category”A way to group events inside My calendar (for example, “Workout” or “Work”). You can pick one category and share it (7-7 Category sharing).
“Category sharing”You share the events of one of your categories. The other person can edit those events too.
“Show my events”Makes the events of one of your categories appear in a shared calendar as well. The originals stay in My calendar, and the other person can only view them. You choose this with “Show on calendars” in the category row.
“Manage sharing”The sharing screen in Settings. The app introduces this screen as “Shared calendars, categories, and cycle”. Creating a shared calendar, inviting people, joining with an invite code, and category sharing are all here.
“Can edit” / “Can view”The permission that decides whether a person invited to a shared calendar can write events.
“Only the owner decorates”When this is on, only the person who created the calendar decorates it. A new calendar starts with it on. Turn it off and everyone decorates. Each person needs their own Pro to decorate.
“Join with an invite code”The place to enter a code, at the top of Manage sharing.
view modeThe usual calendar screen. Tap a date to write and read events, to-dos, and diary entries.
decorating modeThe state you enter by tapping the brush button. “Decorating mode” appears on the screen, and you put stickers and notes on the calendar. Tap “Done decorating” to return to view mode.
“Diary”Writing you keep for each date. Each person writes one page per day. By default, only you see your diary. In a shared calendar, turn on “Show my diary” and the diary entries written in that calendar are shared there. Chapter 6 covers this in detail.
“Upcoming”The strip floating near the bottom of the month screen. It shows upcoming events one at a time, in turn.

View mode and decorating mode are names this guide uses. On the app's screen, “Decorating mode” appears when you enter decorating mode.

Tap the calendar name to switch between “My calendar” and your shared calendars. “Manage sharing” is at the bottom of the list.

1-3Where your records are stored

Calliary stores your records in your iCloud. Records, sync, sharing, and the web all use iCloud. That is why the same calendar appears on every iPhone, iPad, and Mac signed in with the same Apple Account. On Apple Watch, you see today's events and your next event from the paired iPhone.

  • If you turn off iCloud for Calliary in your device settings, the copy on the device is cleared and the calendar looks empty.
  • After you turn it back on, close Calliary and open it again. Calliary downloads your records from iCloud again.
  • While iCloud for Calliary is off, you can't join a shared calendar. The app then tells you “iCloud is off, so you can't join yet.”

On the web, your browser gets your Calliary records directly from your iCloud (Apple CloudKit). The Calliary website's server sends only the files that make up the web pages. When you sign out on the web or your sign-in expires, the copy stored in that browser is deleted too.

What the app shows while iCloud is off, and how to turn it back on, is in 2-1 Installing and checking iCloud.

1-4Writing is free, decorating is Pro

In Calliary, writing is free and decorating your calendar comes with Pro.

If the table is wider than the screen, swipe sideways to see all of it.

  • Calendar images exported for free have a small Calliary mark in the corner. The purchase screen says “With Pro, calendar images are saved without the Calliary mark.”
  • “Get a friend started and color palette editing opens up as a gift.” When a friend joins something you shared, this feature opens for free. Brush decorating does not open. Details are in 7-13 Friend invite gift.

When a free user taps the brush button, a screen showing what Pro includes opens. The first-run guide also ends the brush card with “Brush decorating opens with Pro.”

The full comparison of free and Pro is in 17-1 What is free and what Pro unlocks, and plans and the free trial are in 17-2 Plans, free trial, and Family Sharing.

  • A person with no Apple device at all can't join a shared calendar. Once an account has joined in the app, it can see that calendar on the web from any browser.
  • If you sign in on the web with an Apple Account that has never created a record in the app, you see “No Calliary records yet” and “Check that you signed in with the same Apple Account as the app. Once you add an event in the app, your calendar shows up here.”
  • You can't create your first event on the web.

Differences between devices are collected in Chapter 18 Differences by device.
